Directorate of Quality Assurance


St John's University of Tanzania established the Directorate of Quality Assurance (DQA) in September 2007 right from the day the University started. As a Christian University, St John’s University of Tanzania (SJUT) aspires to attain extraordinary stature as a significant global player in the provision of higher education. As such the University is committed to academic excellence. The Directorate of Quality Assurance exists to contribute effectively to the University’s aspiration, continually determining whether or not quality standards set internally for measuring performance in all core operational areas of the University are constantly met and updated and that they measure up to the national, regional and international benchmarks.


This internal organ exists to constantly monitor and evaluate quality assurance processes at the university. The primary objective of the Directorate is to promote the pursuit of the highest standards in teaching, research and outreach services possible and to promote effective management of all awards of St John’s University of Tanzania so that SJUT graduates are highly competitive in the knowledge-based global economy of the 21st century.

Quality Assurance Policy

In order to meet these high expectations, the Directorate discharges its responsibilities by continually coordinating the operationalization of the Quality Assurance Policy of the University. To access the policy document click here.  

The regular agenda of the Directorate includes, but not limited to:

  • Enhancing the understanding of Quality Assurance, its values and its contribution towards the vision of the institution
  • Monitoring of adherence to set processes and procedures,
  • Monitoring adherence to set rules and regulations,
  • Promoting the provision of environment conducive for teaching, learning, and research & community services of global standards,
  • Identifying evidence-based priority areas for capacity building.
  • Advocating continuous learning of best practices from globally respected higher learning institutions in order to enhance the quality of the core functions of SJUT.

The scope of Quality Assurance activities includes all relevant units at SJUT. With this in mind the Directorates continues to expand the capacity of members of staff in the above=mentioned areas in order to continually push the boundaries of the quality agenda of the core functions of the university.  


The Directorate organizes workshops/seminars to build capacity on priority areas. The Directorate coordinates periodic self-assessment processes, which usually includes the invitation of an internationally credible external peer review team.
