APPOINTMENT OF THE NEW VICE CHANCELLOR OF ST JOHN’S UNIVERSITY OF TANZANIA

 

 

The Board of Trustees and the Chancellor in conformity with the Charter and Rules of St John’s University of Tanzania have appointed Prof. Gabriel Meshack Paul Mwaluko as the new Vice Chancellor of St John’s University of Tanzania on a contract of five years with effect from 15th December 2011.

Prof. Mwaluko who is a medical doctor by profession is a holder of MB. Ch.B Degree of the University of East Africa at Makerere obtained in 1969, Msc (Clinical Pharmacology) and PhD (Pharmacology) from the Manchester University obtained in 1972 and 1975, respectively.

 

The new Vice Chancellor had been at the helm of the institution for 21 years. He has served in different capacities in academic institutions, Hospital Management in international organisations and Non-Governmental organisations.  He served as Head of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine between 1975 and 1985, Dean of Faculty of Medicine at the University of Dar es salaam from 1988 to 1990.

 

Prof. Mwaluko was the Director-General of Muhimbili Medical Centre from 1990 to1991.  He then moved to the University of Zimbabwe as Visiting Professor.  Between 1995 and 1998 he was Regional Advisor of WHO/AFRO Health Systems Research Programme.  Thereafter he has been Senior Technical Advisor and Chief Technical Advisor of the Tanzanian Essential Strategic Against AIDS (TANESA) and lately Director of TANESA since April 2010.

 

The Board of Trustees and the University Council are excited that Prof. Mwaluko brings on board a wealth of experience in education management gained over his long career in the sector. Prof. Mwaluko is coming at the right time in the University’s growth stage.

 

The Board of Trustees would like to thank all members of the Search Committee, the University Council, University community, students and staff, parents and guardians, Tanzania Commission for Universities, and the many stake holders who have been part of the growth to date.
