The Centre was launched in September 2009, as a branch of the already established St John’s University of Tanzania, based in Dodoma.
The C entre is situated at Buguruni- Malapa, about five kilometers from Julius Nyerere International Airport and the same distance from the centre of Dar es Salaam city, (the Commercial capital of Tanzania). St Mark’s was until 2009 a Theological College which for many decades trained the country’s clergy and church leaders, both from across Tanzania and neighboring countries. The Anglican Church of Tanzania decided to absorb St Mark’s into SJUT so as to nurture and develop it. The aim is to make it grow into a constituent college and later develop into a fully fledged ACT University. This is in response to the great demand for tertiary education and the lack of sufficient tertiary institutions in the country. We believe that tertiary education is of paramount importance in providing the professional skills needed to develop this country and to overcome the appalling poverty and inequalities which our nation faces.
The Centre is set in a spacious and attractive landscaped setting with many well designed and constructed buildings. Most of these have been recently renovated and incorporated into the new college. However, much still needs to be done and the college has a long way to go to meet our own goals as well as modern standards and expectations.
