The Anglican Church of Tanzania held a fundraising event for  the proposed  St John’s University of Tanzania

The event was held at the premises of the proposed University in the Kikuyu area of Dodoma on Saturday 10th February, 2007.

A total of Tsh 320,000,000 was raised at this event including  pledges.

The Guest of Honour was the Honourable Jakaya Kikwete, President of the United Republic of Tanzania. The President, himself, gave a donation of Tsh 10,000,000/=. For this the Anglican Church of Tanzania is very grateful, especially since this means that the Presidents of the second, third and fourth phases of the Government of Tanzania have supported the preparations for the new University. This assures us that the Government fully support our plans and preparations. It is now the duty of the University project team within the Anglican Church of Tanzania, with the help of Almighty God, to do everything in their power to ensure the success of the University.

The President first visited the University offices and signed the visitors’ book. He then inspected the classrooms. His tour of the University premises was followed by the formal fundraising event in the Assembly Hall of the University. First Professor Manoris Meshack spoke on behalf of the University Project Team to give information about what has already been achieved. Mr John Ham gave greetings on behalf of the Friends of St John’s University in the United States. The Anglican Archbishop of Tanzania, the Most Revd Donald Mtetemela, then spoke about the position of the Anglican Church with respect to development and welcomed the President to speak and to inaugurate the fundraising. The President then praised the development work of the Anglican Church citing the work of the Diocese of Mara with a development project amongst farmers. He then inaugurated the fundraising. The Archbishop expressed his thanks to the President, to other donors, and to the Minister of Higher Education for his support.

On the following day, Sunday, 11th February, a service of thanks giving was held at the University Chapel. The Archbishop preached at this service. Also present were the Dean of the Anglican Church of Tanzania and Bishop of Tanga, the Rt Revd Philip Baji, the Bishops of Central Tanganyika, Dar es Salaam, Morogoro, Mpwapwa, the Rift Valley and Tabora, and the Assistant Bishop of Central Tanganyika.

The fundraising for the University was originally launched, in December 2005, by the immediate former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, the Honourable Benjamin William Mkapa.
