ST JOHN'S UNIVERSITY OF TANZANIA

"To learn to serve "

 04-02-2012

St.Mark's Centre

The Centre was launched in September 2009, as a twig of the already established St John’s University of Tanzania, based in Dodoma.  However, Dodoma is isolated from most of the population who primarily inhabit the coastal region, and in particular the city of Dar es Salaam. It is anticipated that St Mark’s Centre offers quality education precisely where it is most needed.

The Centre is situated at Buguruni- Malapa, about five kilometers from Julius Nyerere International Airport and the same distance from the centre of Dar es Salaam city, (the Commercial capital of Tanzania).   St Mark’s was until recently a Theological College which for many decades has trained hundreds of the country’s clergy and church leaders, both from across Tanzania and neighboring countries.  The Anglican Church of Tanzania decided to develop St Mark’s into a University Training College in response to the great demand for tertiary education and the lack of sufficient tertiary institutions to meet that demand. We believe that tertiary education is of paramount importance in providing the professional skills needed to develop this country and to overcome the appalling poverty and inequalities which our nation faces.

The Centre is set in a spacious and attractive landscaped setting with many well designed and constructed buildings. Most of these have been recently renovated and incorporated into the new college. However, much still needs to be done and the college has a long way to go to meet our own goals as well as modern standards and expectations.
The Centre has the three schools:

SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY AND RELIGIOUS STUDIES
This trains young pastor’s as well church workers who will be of service to their local communities. The school offers a Bachelor of Arts in Theology with Education and with Management which will provide students with the necessary knowledge in theology with Education and Managerial skills and techniques to enable them to manage various projects intended to alleviate poverty in their local communities as well as serve the nation.
